June 2023 Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Report

Sales Increase in June 2023: A Closer Look at the Electric Scooter Market

Greetings, fellow e-scooter enthusiasts! It’s time to dive into the recent sales trends in the electric scooter market. June 2023 brought us some surprising news, as sales figures took a sudden plunge following the impressive heights reached in May. The sales of electric two-wheelers experienced a staggering 67 percent drop, leaving many wondering about the cause behind this decline.

The culprit behind this downturn can be traced back to the reduction of the FAME II subsidy by the Indian government in May. With the subsidy no longer as attractive, a significant number of individuals hesitated to purchase electric two-wheelers. While the spike in sales during May undoubtedly boosted the overall sales data, it, unfortunately, had a detrimental effect on June’s numbers.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries’ decision to decrease the FAME II subsidy had a substantial negative impact on the overall growth of India’s electric two-wheeler market. The consequences were immediate, as the registration and sales of two-wheelers plummeted. Furthermore, the capping of incentives directly led to a surge in retail prices across the entire electric vehicle two-wheeler industry.

Let’s look at the performance of some key players in the electric scooter market during June 2023. Ola Electric managed to maintain its top position by crossing the 10,000 mark, with 17,552 electric scooters delivered. Despite the subsidy reductions, Ola Electric remains a frontrunner. It’s worth noting that Ola Electric had to increase the prices of its scooters due to the FAME II subsidy reductions. Here are the ex-showroom prices for Ola electric scooters:

  • Ola S1 Pro: ₹1,39,999
  • Ola S1: ₹1,29,999
  • Ola S1 Ar. ₹1,09,999

On the other hand, TVS and Ather witnessed a decline in sales. TVS saw a drastic drop from 20,254 units in May to 7,791 units in June 2023. The TVS Qube is now priced at ₹1,41,000, while the Qube+ costs ₹1,37,000.

Ather, which delivered only 4,540 electric scooters in June 2023, also faced sales setbacks. The revised ex-showroom prices in Bengaluru for the Ather 450X with Pro Pack are ₹1,55,435, and without the Pro Pack, it costs ₹1,44,927. Ather also teased the launch of its new electric scooter, the Ather 4505, starting at a price of ₹2,29,999. It boasts an impressive IDC range of 115 km and a top speed of 90 km/h.

Despite the challenges, other players in the market made their presence felt. Bajaj secured the fourth position with 2,966 sales in June 2023, followed by Okinawa with 2,015 sales.

Additionally, some new entrants entered the market. Simple Energy, based in Bengaluru, delivered just 10 units of their Simple One electric scooters in June. Revolt emerged as the leader in electric motorcycles, selling 711 units. York Motors from Pune delivered 44 electric motorcycles, while Ultraviolette Automotive from Bengaluru delivered 41 units of the F77 electric motorcycle.

Although the overall sales figures in June 2023 were lower than expected, some companies managed to navigate the challenging market conditions.
